Are you starting a business? Writing a blog? Designing a website?
It's so exciting that you are! However, as you likely already know, you will eventually need to settle on a name.
Coming up with a name for your very first "whatever" should be exciting, right? It is... except that it's also intensely difficult.
I thought naming my daughter was hard. Being that I'm American, my husband is Kenyan, we live in Sweden, AND I've taught HUNDREDS of students... our ideas about baby names were never ending and impossible. I actually, to this day, can't believe my daughter has a name!
The same thing happened when trying to choose a name for my candle company.
The very first thing I did was write a list of words that described what candle making and candles meant to me.
Even with this amazing list of words, it seemed like every idea I thought of was the name of another business. So, very against what I wanted to do, I decided to use an AI generator tool to help me out.
This is ultimately where I got Honeywood as both the words honey and wood were showing up in multiple generated choices, strangely, never together.
The words honey and wood took me back to my original word list. They are both materials with meanings so fitting for the uses of candles; such as nourishment, vitality, abundance, peace, love, and renewal.
On a lighter note (and this is the part I share in my story), Honeywood just clicked for me because my husband loves and uses honey to a level that I've literally researched us getting our own bees! Wood represents my life in tree-filled, nature loving Sweden.
When I said the name Honeywood Candles to my husband, he looked at me and said "Amy, that sounds too American and remember you live in Sweden." This meant the name was perfect. Honey makes me think of Africa, wood makes me think of Sweden, and if Honeywood together sounds American, then we are fully connected.
If you are in the midst of this "choosing a name" dilemma, don't give up! You will find a name and you will love it. Once you've chosen a name, there are more official things to look into like securing your URL, deciding how you want to legally register your business, and getting it out there on social media platforms etc.
I both love and am proud of the name I finally chose. Say it to some friends and share the Honeywood experience with someone you know.
Good luck in naming your thing. Once you do, send me a message so that I can follow you!
Love,
Amy
